Italy travel: Pompeii arrival Italy travel: Pompeii arrival
Italy travel: Pompeii. Our Perillo Tours Familia arrives at one of the best preserved archaeological sites on the planet. So unique it even has a color: "Pompeii Red" is noticed at the start of our tour. It would have been great to record the explanation of our guide as the soundtrack to this segment. Fortunately, the visual record of our experiences in Pompeii stand on their own! (2:53)

Italy travel: Pompeii ruins Italy travel: Pompeii ruins
Italy travel: The ruins of Pompeii, pretty much as they were on 24 August, 79 AD. This was a thriving city one day, and a few days later, it was buried under tons of ash, many meters deep . In this segment, our Perillo Tours Familia walks around the Basilica, the most imposing of Pompeii's public buildings. According to the tour guide, the diameter of the supporting columns indicates that the roof was probably 30 feet high! (2:26)

Italy travel: Pompeii tour, authentic ruins or recreated? Italy travel: Pompeii tour, authentic ruins or recreated?
Italy travel: Pompeii. The ruins of Pompeii has had some sections recreated. Was it the red bricks? Authentic or recreated, it all blends. Our Perillo Tours Pompeii guide is giving great details about each section via our wireless headsets. (2:28)

Our first slideshow of Pompeii. It would have been great if our Perillo Tours guide description was the soundtrack, but enjoy the copyleft music by Macroform. (4:09)

Italy travel: Pompeii Altar of the Temple of Vespasian Italy travel: Pompeii Altar of the Temple of Vespasian
Italy travel: Pompeii. Our Perillo Tours Familia sees the Temple of Vespasian, beginning with an arch which had such tremendous detail that it was covered in plexiglass for preservation. The video shows that dogs were welcome in Pompeii! The side of the altar facing the forum has a relief carving representing a sacrificial scene. The offering in this scene is a bull, indicating that the sacrifice was for a living emperor. (1:41)

Italy travel: Pompeii resident's last gasps Italy travel: Pompeii resident's last gasps
Italy travel: Pompeii. Most of our Perillo Tours Familia is visible in this segment, as we meet a resident of Pompeii. You can see the anguish, as he was caught in the painful last gasps of life. Wow. Mt. Vesuvius had been proclaimed an extinct volcano by the experts of the day, so the eruption was quite a surprise to the residents of Pompeii. They didn't have time to escape. With some clever techniques, archaeologists were able to pour plaster molds of the residents of Pompeii where they died. (2:04)

Italy travel: Pompeii is still an active excavation site. Italy travel: Pompeii is still an active excavation site.
Italy travel: Pompeii is still an active excavation site, so there are some areas which are off limits to our Perillo Tours group. Only about 70% of the city has been unearthed (or perhaps 'un-ashed'?). The parts which are accessible to the public are well worth the trip. At the end of this segment, we see one of the oldest "welcome mats" outside the house of one of the more important people of Pompeii. The mosaic says "HAVE", which means "welcome". (2:19)

Italy travel: Pompeii House of the Faun Italy travel: Pompeii House of the Faun
Italy travel: Pompeii's "finest example of a private residence that Antiquity has left us" according to the guide book we bought. The faun statue is a recreation. The Perillo Tours guide said that the million-tile mosaic depicting the battle between Alexander and Darius was original, but the guidebook says that is was moved to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Italy travel: Pompeii bakery still has 81 loaves of bread baking! Italy travel: Pompeii bakery still has 81 loaves of bread baking!
Italy travel: Pompeii's bakery was caught off guard also, and 81 loaves of carbonized bread were found in the oven. Our Perillo Tours guide brought the scene to life for us. She then described the McDonalds of Pompeii, followed by a brief tour of a middle class house. Next stop: the whorehouse of Pompeii! (1:47)

Italy travel: Pompeii brothel, and another resident's final death throes Italy travel: Pompeii brothel, and another resident's final death throes
Italy travel: Yes, Pompeii had a brothel. In fact, the guide book says there were 25 such houses. Our Perillo Tours guide suggested that the pictures above the doors were a menu, of sorts, depicting the various services available. (Not as interesting as it might sound.) Much more interesting was the next section we visited, where another former resident of Pompeii was displayed in his final agonizing position. (2:33)

Italy travel: Pompeii, location for "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii" Italy travel: Pompeii, location for "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii"
Italy travel: Who remembers the 1971 movie "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii"? Here's the amphitheater where part of the movie was filmed. Then, our Perillo Tours Familia sees some nice views of the outside of this walled city. (2:40)
