Italy travel: Pompeii Altar of the Temple of Vespasian Italy travel: Pompeii. Our Perillo Tours Familia sees the Temple of Vespasian, beginning with an arch which had such tremendous detail that it was covered in plexiglass for preservation. The video shows that dogs were welcome in Pompeii! The side of the altar facing the forum has a relief carving representing a sacrificial scene. You can see the anguish, as he was caught in the painful last gasps of life. Wow. Mt. Vesuvius had been proclaimed an extinct volcano by the experts of the day, so the eruption was quite a surprise to the residents of Pompeii. They didn't have time to escape. Only about 70% of the city has been unearthed (or perhaps 'un-ashed'?). The parts which are accessible to the public are well worth the trip. At the end of this segment, we see one of the oldest "welcome mats" outside the house of one of the more important people of Pompeii. The mosaic says "HAVE", which means "welcome".
