Italy travel: Rome. Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome. More video of the largest church in the world devoted to Mary, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, showing how every surface is decorated with priceless art. Our Perillo Tours Familia is tired at this point, but the beauty of the living history keeps us going. (1:56) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Italy travel: Rome. Scala Santa steps with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome. According to tradition, the Scala Santa steps were walked by Christ. St. Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, brought these 28 steps from Jerusalem. Pope Sixtus V had them placed in their present position. Not all of our Perillo Tours Familia had a chance to see these steps. The steps are covered in wood so that no foot can touch them, and this is the reason why the faithful climb up them on their knees; the video shows them saying prayers on each step. There's a statue of Pontius Pilate holding a bag of 30 coins, his compensation for his betrayal. Then a view of the outside of St. John's, the "official" home of the Pope, even if he does spend most of his time in the Vatican. St. John's is Vatican property again, so our Perillo Tours Familia is no longer officially in Italy! (3:33) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Italy travel: Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, St. John's, also known as the Basilica of St. John Lateran. This is video of the 'official' home of the Pope, even though he spends more time in the Vatican. Our Perillo Tours Familia enjoys the incredible details on the church walls, where every picture tells a story. This Basilica is " Officially named Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris ("Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior"), it is the oldest and ranks first (being the cathedral of Rome) among the four major basilicas of Rome, and holds the title of ecumenical mother church (mother church of the whole inhabited world) among Catholics." Thank you, Wikipedia: "As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, containing the papal throne (Cathedra Romana), it ranks above all other churches in the Catholic Church, even above St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican." Italy travel: Rome. The Catacombs, with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, the Christian Catacombs (beginning). Unlike the Catacombs in Paris, these catacombs had no bones. However, it was a rather amazingly intricate and extensive network of tunnels! The video shows that you wouldn't want to play 'hide and seek' here. The one that we visited had tens of thousands of bodies interred in it's time. All the half arches you see in this video held a body or two (or more); the tiny spaces held children. Our Perillo Tours Familia walked single file down these narrow corridors. The sterility of the current presentation belies the magnitude of 10,000 corpses decomposing; the stench must have been overwhelming. (3:55) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Italy travel: Rome, more Catacombs, with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, video of more catacombs, and the most elaborately decorated crypt of our tour. All of the Apostles are drawn on the inside of the arch, such that the occupant(s) would 'see' the drawing. The person who was laid to rest here must have been very important to warrant such a tomb with a view. On our Perillo Tours of Rome we have gone from the Sistine Chapel to this painted arch in the Catacombs. Both artists worked on their backs for a long time to perform their tasks, but the artist in the catacombs did it by candlelight amongst the stench of 10,000 decaying corpses. Probably rats and flies, too. (1:28) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Italy travel: Rome, back on the tour bus with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, back on the tour bus. Our Perillo Tours Familia is delighted to be sitting again. The video shows a bridge, in use continuously since 62 BC. Nice views of Rome and modern day Roman traffic. It's just as tough for an ambulance to get thru traffic here as it is in New York City! The Tiber River is present also, only more polluted than it was 2,000 years ago. (2:09) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Italy travel: Rome, sights from the bus with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, almost back to our hotel. The video shows the Italian High Court, and a view of St. Peter's Basilica from a bridge. We're practically back to our Perillo Tours hotel, so you can see we were very nicely located. However, Rome is not a walking town. Too big. We circle around the courthouse, which is only about 95 years old. Our 48 passenger bus navigated these streets very well! Italy travel: Rome, our last dinner with Perillo Tours of Italy Italy travel: Rome, our last dinner together as a Perillo Tours Familia. Complete with live music, about which we couldn't do a thing. In fairness, the video shows that she should have been on stage at La Scala Opera House instead of in our restaurant. (1:46) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |
